A story about innovation …
Once upon a time, in Italy, there was a busy marketplace. Merchants and farmers would travel from far and wide to sell their produce. Townspeople and visitors alike knew that the best of the land was available at this market, and would wander from stall to stall sampling food and wares.
When you entered the market, the sights, smells, sounds and energy of the place was astounding. Vendors would boast and cajole and pull you aside to sample their goods. You could quickly forget what you came for – leave with a basket of bread when you came for jam, or apples when you came for oranges.
“Hey you! Come to my stand, I have the freshest oranges in all of Napoli!” One man shouted.
“Signor! Come over here, I have the tastiest oranges in all of Italy!” Another cried, trying to drown him out.
“Oi! Psst! Don’t listen to them! Come taste my oranges, they are absolutely the best in the entire WORLD!” A farmer interrupted, voice booming as he grabbed your sleeve and pulled you to his cart.
It was hard to hear over all the shouting, but deep within the market, a song emanated from one vendor’s stall. This vendor did not shout or spruik, but he always used the same stall, and if you followed the music, you could find him.
This vendor had a little phonograph, and throughout the day he would play long and beautiful arias, or lively operettas. You would come to investigate the music, he would ask you your name, and you would talk. He told stories about the songs, how his fruit was picked to the sounds of the opera, and how the music made its way into the fruit.
You always left this vendor’s stall with a smile, and a big bag of oranges.
